Regeneration. 1917.
05-Aug-2005
Artist initiated project with AOS2001. Using early 20Cth utopian motif of the vertical spiral on sacred ground. Pukekaroa, the place of bitter tears, a place of battle and death and memorial of fallen warriors. The structure becomes a trellis for a living wreath as the foliage hides it in a celebration of amnesia.
The year alludes to the commemoration of the Russian revolution of that year and Tatlins subsequent memorialisation of it and to the industrialisation of warfare at battles such as Ypres, that were waged in 1917.
The sculpture was supported by the P.A.Edmiston Trust.
